A chocolate chip, toasted almond cookie is the top Christmas treat at Nathan Bain’s house in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia. Bain operates Old World Bakery & Deli, and he says the cookies remind him of his grandparents. We believe they are just straight-up delicious.



Yield: 3 dozen



250 ml (1 cup) brown sugar

125 ml (1/2 cup) white sugar

250 ml (1 cup) margarine

5 ml (1 tsp) vanilla

1 egg

500 ml (2 cups) unbleached flour

250 ml (1 cup) oats

250 ml (1 cup) toasted almonds

185 ml (3/4 cup) chocolate chips

5 ml (1 tsp) each salt, baking soda, baking powder



Mix wet ingredients and sugar together; then add remainder.

Drop by spoonful onto baking sheet, pressing down.

Bake in 175 C (350 F) oven for about 20 minutes until golden brown.
