Knee-slapper opens 35th season . . .

Monday, May 28th - The best comedies are those that centre around events we all hope to go off without a hitch but invariably turn out to be disastrous for the characters on stage and hilarious for everyone in the audience. It’s Your Funeral, by Playhouse veteran Jamie Williams, is a sparkling example of such a comedy.

Playing June 7th through June 30th, this comedy chronicles a day in the life of George Cranston and his desperate and bumbling efforts to quit his gambling habit, to start a new life as the operator of a new business. But not just any business - Heaven’s Door Funeral Home.

It’s been one year since George quit betting on the ponies. It’s cost half of his wife Helen’s inheritance and near their entire marriage. The pressure to make the funeral home a success mounts when their first event is the high-profile funeral of a local Senator’s mother.

When George’s former bookie Rodney makes a surprise visit, an hilarious do or die comedy follows, as George enlists him to deal with every obstacle the world can stack against him. It all starts to unravel when George receives alarming news from his doctor, a threatening visit from his shady silent partners, and constant demands from the Senator who  doubts

every move George makes. Not to mention antics from his whacky staff, Ima, Berta and Hedwig, Pomeranian triplets left over from the last owner of the funeral home.

The show is directed by Williams, an audience favourite and master of the art of comedy. He has starred in countless Playhouse comedies such as Run for Your Wife, The Affections of May and It Runs in the Family and was last seen as a young doctor who received much attention from three hilarious ladies in last season’s hit, Halfway There.

The cast is a powerhouse of talent and features Brian Young as Senator Higston Briggs. Young wowed Playhouse audiences in last season’s Boeing Boeing and in previous shows such as The Gentleman Clothier and Last of the Red Hot Lovers. He’s joined by Kate Gordon who has the busy task of playing all three triplets Ima, Berta and Hedwig. Gordon has been seen in The Playhouse’s Bedfull of Foreigners, Whose Wives Are They Anyway and A Nice Family Gathering.

Derek Moran plays Rodney and returns to The Playhouse after starring in The Playhouse’s No Sex Please, We’re British. The role of George Cranston is played by Playhouse newcomers Aidan DeSalaiz who appeared in a wide variety of roles at theatres from the Stratford Festival to Halifax’s Neptune Theatre and London’s the Grand.

Also appearing for the first time on the Playhouse stage, playing George’s wife Helen, is Zoe Sweet, who is not only a busy actor and playwright but also co-artistic director of Kingston’s FeverGraph Theatre.

It’s Your Funeral is followed by the comedies Knickers! by Sarah Quick in July, Neil Simon’s Plaza Suite in August and Norm Foster’s The Great Kooshog Lake Hollis McCauley Fishing Derby in September.
